This is a pretty simple forum game which I've found really enjoyable and eye opening to the broad world of music on other forums.
All you have to do is listen to the song above you, rate it on a scale from 1-10, and give two or more comments on the song.
The song must be provided in a link to a website which lets you play the track for free and without a membership, so yes to youtube and bandcamp, but no to spotify or the like.
In the OP I'll give Jebus his due and rate a Kayak song.
Kayak - "Merlin"
6.5/10
There was a nice atmosphere to the song with the reverb effect and cool synths. There's a funny melody at the end and elsewhere which rings some bells, but not enough for me to remember where I first heard that melody from. The vocals were pretty decent and carried the song well, and the guitar leads and guitar/synth solos were cool, but I felt that the song was a bit overrlong and had too many unoutstanding parts, like they wanted to make it epic by making it longer than need be. Feels very 80's, but in a good way.
So, now here's my song for reviewal up next, if anyone's interested.

I like the instrumentals, but I'm personally not a big fan of this style of vocals (too clear and high-pitched)

I'm not usually a fan of heavy music but this is an excellent song. I especially like the slow melodic parts. I think Dream Sphere introduced me to Ensiferum last year.

Very mellow song that has a 70s vibe to it. A work of art I'd say, the instrumentals are superb. A lyrical masterpiece.

I'm not much of a fan of rap but that was kinda funny. His phrasing and flow seemed a little off, but what do I know: being so inexperienced with the genre. Overrall a decent novelty song. 6/10

First impression: This is definitely not the kind of music I listen to.Dream Sphere wrote:I'm not much of a fan of rap but that was kinda funny. His phrasing and flow seemed a little off, but what do I know: being so inexperienced with the genre. Overrall a decent novelty song. 6/10

As soon as I saw the guy's face and heard his voice- What is this?
Holy shit, wtf is this?
Metal music like this always seems kind of goofy to me. I can't really get into it.
Oh my god. How did you even find this? o_O
4/10. No offense if you like it, just not something I'm really into.

Thought the song and instrumentals were good, but personally found the lyrics and subject matter pretentious. Very black.

^So, songs about things that actually matter, as opposed to superficial music about 'the club' or whatever, are pretentious?
I'm totally fine with people not liking my music, but the reasoning suggests you think songs about real issues are bad, which doesn't make sense if you care about the world.

Never said they weren't. Not sure where you got that from. Plus, describe for me what makes a song "matter."EquALLity wrote:^So, songs about things that actually matter, as opposed to superficial music about 'the club' or whatever, are pretentious?
I didn't say the song was bad, just pretentious. And I'll also respond to this with a bit of the preface from George Carlin's "Brain Droppings" book.EquALLity wrote:I'm totally fine with people not liking my music, but the reasoning suggests you think songs about real issues are bad, which doesn't make sense if you care about the world.
[quote="George Carlin didn't give a fuck about the weather. The only time he cared about the weather if there was a fucking tornado two feet away from him, and even then it's just be like "Fuck you tornado!""]I frankly don't give a fuck about how it all turns out in this country- or anywhere else for that matter. I think the human game was up a long time ago, and now we're just playing out the string. And that is, of course, precisely what I find so amusing: the slow circling of the drain by a once promising species, and the sappy, ever-more-desperate belief in this country that there actually is some sort of "American Dream," which has merely been misplaced.
The decay and disintegration of this culture is astonishingly amusing if you are emotionally detached from it. I have always viewed it from a safe distance, knowing I don't belong; it doesn't include me, and it never has. No matter how you care to define it, I do not identify with the local group. Planet, species, race, nation, state, religion, party, union, club, association, neighborhood improvement committee; I have no interest in any of it. I love and treasure individuals as I meet them, I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to.
. . . My interest in "issues" is merely to point out how badly we're doing, not to suggest a way we can do better . . . I enjoy describing how things are, I have no interest in how they "ought to be." And I certainly have no interest in fixing them. I sincerely believe that if you think there's a solution, you're part of the problem. My motto: Fuck Hope!

I like it but can see how other people would find it goofy. While I think that they were serious for the song, the music video seems pretty tongue-in-cheek and goes along funnily next to the lyrics.EquALLity wrote:First impression: This is definitely not the kind of music I listen to.Dream Sphere wrote:I'm not much of a fan of rap but that was kinda funny. For as to where I found it. Carcass are a pretty popular technical/melodic death metal band in the genre, so once you're in the fold of metal heads who knows what's what; you get bombarded with all these classic bands to check out.
