"Do you have any evidence to support that claim?"
"Which God?"
"Why is God an Asshole?"

Re: God is trying to teach us a lesson
That's not the only thing they do say. Something else they say is that "God never burdens us with more than we can handle".
I think the biblical mythology of Job is also very similar, one can look it up if unfamiliar. Tldr of the story is : biblical God burdens Job tremendously and repeatedly despite Job being a good human being. Job questions why this could have happened to him. But ultimately perseveres in his faith and remains a good person. Later God reveals he was testing Job and rewards him for his perseverance and integrity despite all the hardships.
So I guess the moral here is perseverance during hardships. And for believers this helps by extrapolating the reason to God so its a useful concept. Better than getting beaten down by your problems because at least you stand a chance here rather than just giving up.
(Darkmatter2525 did do a parody on Job
)
The other thing they suggest is that you may be paying for sins of it happens only to you or if it happens to everyone, they try to find a scapegoat. They love suggesting such things on people they disapprove of, sad part being these folks don't get any help from them during bad times. This happens a lot during natural calamities or in Murcian school shootings etc. They blame the gays, schools' lack of prayers etc and push their ideology even during difficult times that others go through and the followers wind up being obliviously insensitive. Whatever happens to "love thy enemy" during such times idk.

Re: God is trying to teach us a lesson
There's that little part in every religion that says either that bad stuff happens only to bad people or that bad stuff happens to good people because they're being tested or cleared. And i just can't imagine how anyone could believe such things, since "God's lesson" is so unproportionate. Think about it, there's kids in Africa, who haven't done anything wrong and yet they're "tested" with ebola, poverty, cancer and who knows what else. Was the holocaust also a test for the jews? even the newborn ones? what did THEY do?
I tried believing in a God, but i just couldn't, because whenever i opened my eyes i saw a world of destruction, poverty, illness, war, murder, theft, adultery, etc.
"When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life." -John Lennon

Re: God is trying to teach us a lesson
I hated the book of Job. We had to study it on high school. I used to call it "A tool of opression and brainwashing", because the story told how Job was rich because he believed in and feared God xDgarrethdsouza wrote:That's not the only thing they do say. But it was a funny story regardless, i just hated the concept. Kinda like Samson the barbarian. I hated the concept of him being powerful because of God, but it was so ridiculous it turned out being hilarious.
You know the best part of the book of Job? It reveals it was God the one who allowed Satan to do horrible things, christians seem to always overlook that fact though.
DarkMatter2525 did indeed do an animation about the book of Job, but he did too overlook some important aspects of the story.
