My problem with theism

Post by Mateo3112 »

It seems to be a common trend, that when debating, atheists have to face the common "Why don't you let everyone believe what they want to?" question. I don't really know if it happens to everyone, but it has happened to me quite a few times. Even in class when disscusing the bible i give my opinion on how it is only a tool for brainwashing and the teacher stops me and tells me it's just literature. Now, i don't know if he stops me because he does not want me to offend anyone christian on the classroom, but my point is: The bible SHOULD be disscused. It's not only a piece of literature, and i fail to see how could anyone look at it as just that. I consider myself not only an atheist, but also an antitheist. I don't hate religious people or anything like that, but on the other hand, i heavily believe the world would be better without religion and that it should not exist.
My argument is the following: Imagine a world, where the most powerful and weaponized countries were commanded by people who believed
That there's an invisible man, living in the sky, who watches everything you do every moment of every day of your life. And he has a list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any, any of these ten things he has a special place full of fire and smoke and ash and torture where he will send you to suffer and burn and scream and cry forever and ever until the end of time... But he loves you!
Let's think about it for a moment: The most powerful countries, controlled by people who believe in a magical man in the sky that will send you to suffer for all eternity if you don't do what he says... If you can't see something's wrong with that then there's obviously something wrong with you xD
So people tell me: If those countries are controlled by people who believe in God, then their morals really are perfect, don't you think?.
People tend to forget, or never learn in the first place, that the bible is full of immoral sh*t.
And when i call them out with examples of immorality in leviticus and deuteronomy, they say "Well, yeah, but those were in the old testment". I used to reply that God is the same throughout the whole bible, he didn't change, but that was because, to be honest, i couldn't find any examples in the new testment proving immorality (Except for Matthew 10:34). That is, until i found some examples about how to controll slaves. Not to free slaves, but to controll them (1 Timothy 6:1-2 is a great example).
This is an argument ALL christians make at some point, they think morality is exclusive to christians. I once asked a christian if they knew the ten commandments and they only named, you guessed it; You shalt not kill, You shalt not steal, You shalt not commit adultery. When you notice the first 4 commandments are about praising God, the bible suddenly becomes not that moral at all. And let's not forget that there's nothing about rape in the ten commandments.
So, my problem with the bible is not only its immorality, but the fact that it is inconsistent, God doesn't seem to be the same throughout it.
And that covers most of the problems i have with the bible itself, there's much more, but i don't wanna get much into it, there's infanticide, a weird and fake cure for leprosy, there's that Deutoronomy verse wher it says if a woman is raped she has to marry her rapist (Deutoronomy 22:28), etc. All in all, i can't even comprehend how people believe it. But i'm getting far away from the point.
The point is, the bible is taken as the word of supreme authority by billions of people, if it was simple, innoffensive literature, then it would be fine to not disscus it, but seeing how there's billions of people who believes it as true, it is crucial that we disscus the bible.

How have you determined that the bible is a tool and what it's intended function is? Christian spiritual leaders have no intent of brainwashing people. They think what they are saying is truth. They're not trying to trick people into believing in their God to exploit them, they are just horrifically wrong about reality. This is especially true today. This is I like saying John Dalton tried to brainwash the scientific community with his model of the atom! No. He didn't. He just lacked the knowledge of the electron cloud model of the atom.
The bible SHOULD be disscused.
Indeed it should. Discussion about all things should be promoted! :D

It is a piece of literature. Just one that affects our world in notable ways.

Yes, to an extent you are probably right. It might improve the world a little bit, but you are overlooking what really drives the evils of humanity. Removing the lust for wealth and power would make a much greater impact.

You mean the real world?

Nope. Dogmatic morality is flawed to an extreme extent. Does this mean that removing God gets rid of dogmatic systems of morality? Not at all. For example, a majority of atheists who live in the first world aren't vegans.

Most Christians don't believe any of that. They have anything but consistent beliefs. Maybe this is hard to understand but they just believe whatever is convenient for them + Jesus most of the time.
So, my problem with the bible is not only its immorality, but the fact that it is inconsistent, God doesn't seem to be the same throughout it.
Consistency is inconvenient. Just do what your pastor tells you and you'll be k.

In the past the bible was used as a tool of brainwashing. There are numerous passages in which it states that if you don't obbey God, bad things happens (The entire Deutoronomy chapters). There's also the book of Job, wich tells the story of a perfect man who believed in, and feared God. The bible was obviously intended for brainwashing, even nowadays people have to pay tribute to the catholic church, it's not brainwashing, but it is still controling people to some point. Churchers don't even pay taxes, and i cannot comprehend why

Exactly my point. But our teacher talks about it as if it had no impact on our society, that's what i think is wrong.

Yes, religion is not the only and major problem of today's society, but i still think geting rid of it would improve our world a little bit. It's better than doing nothing and still having religion around.

Yes.

I never said getting rid of God would eliminate dogmatic morality :|

Yes, i believe that's called cherry picking.
