Gun control in 'Murica

Post by knot »

A bit long video, but interesting and highly controversial nonetheless..

I dont really know much about this topic, so I have to ask if you guys agree with his conclusions?

(tl;dw version: USA doesn't have a gun problem, it has problems with its black communities behaving badly)

His comparisons of gun ownership vs. homicide are poor, since there are confounding variables: Rural life.

People in rural areas are more likely to own guns, and the crime rates there are lower due mainly to lower population density (less opportunity, fewer gangs, etc.). Look along those lines for problems.

You have to control for variables when examining these issues.

That said, if the issue is homicides, non-familial homicides are mainly due to the war on drugs fueling gang profit/violence (a place where guns increase violence significantly), and the rest (familial) probably mainly the fault of Disney for reinforcing the cultural 'value' of infatuation as a legitimate reason to have a relationship. ;)

Yes yes,, senpai, I just didn't consider population density! ;;

So the murders/ownership graphs are highly misleading
