Why I don't expect "God showed me signs" as Evidence

Post by _Doc »

When ever I hear someone talk about them finding or viewing signs from their god(s) or goddess(es). They always say "When I search for signs of god I found them". Even priests will say "All you have to do is look for signs to find god!". It is always that I have to look for it. I have had things that I consider dumb luck others would say it was a sign. To give a basic one that happened to me a while ago. I needed a dime to buy me food for launch. As I walked back to my seat I found a dime. I just saw it has prof that someone dropped a dime and not a god dropped it for me. Only when a theist finds signs it is always when they make their own assumptions. Also, when I ask how do they know god did it for you? They say "The Bible". Surprising isn't it? -.- Not to mention why is someone getting Cancer not a sign but getting healed is one. Don't understand that part.
Its a nice feeling when people can agree on something. Don't you agree?

There are pretty much coins lying around everywhere, we're just usually not looking for them. When you need a coin, you can find one pretty easily by paying attention.

Also, if you were short a dime ten times, and you found a dime one time, it's that one time you'd remember. The other times you didn't quite have enough to buy lunch would be forgotten. Recall bias.

So today I told my mom about a dream I had today. As I was waking up I heard a voice that said "The Darkness is inside you" and then I heard a noise from my heater vent. It sounded like a scratching. But, then I realized my mom was next door vacuuming and she went over the vent that is connected to mine. Yet, She told me "that it maybe god trying to talk to [me] but it may have just been a dream, you never know. God has talked to me before.". She then latter gave me a New Language English Bible and i just said thank you. Didn't feel hurting her feelings. I just thought it was funny how just yesterday I posted this and today I had a 'sign'.

Another thing they don't consider is whether or not the signs they find are from their specific god. How do they know it wasn't a different god trying to contact them while they were searching for "God"? They also disregard or discredit people, like myself, who genuinely searched for signs from god, but honestly could not find any and refused to lie to myself. They tend to say "you didn't try hard enough or ask with the right attitude" or that god has tried to give you signs, but you didn't recognize them as such (which makes them pretty weak signs if you ask me)

People see what they want to see. People are very prone to self deception, especially if it means maintaining the consistency of their views. Skepticism is not something that is taught or encouraged in the church, not in my experience anyway. It was all about letting go of your doubts and just trusting god. Without that filter of skepticism they repeatedly succumb to confirmation bias, and the belief is reinforced.
