Atheist vs. Christian Fundraiser

Post by _Doc »

So this kinda an old video, about 2 years old. But, I think it is still like this today. These two ladies on day one held a sign saying Southern United Methodists donate to Los Angeles children's hospital. Then day two the sign said the same thing but instead of United Methodists it was United Atheists. Day 1 they got a lot of respect and made $153 to donate. Day 2 they were looked at with disgust people avoided them but, made $285 from supportive atheists. What is your opinion on this? Do you think people are still like this? Why is it that atheists donated more? I jokingly say it's because atheists don't give all their money to a church. But, I honestly don't know, feel like there is to many possibilities.

Its a nice feeling when people can agree on something. Don't you agree?

That's pretty cool! Nice to see an actually good social experiment. Not great controls, but not terrible either (it looks like they might have been trying harder the second day).

I remember seeing that video when it first came out. I honestly wasn't very surprised at the people's reactions. But I'm pretty sure their "Fiction" T shirts didn't help.

Looking back, this is actually a pretty good video that Glenn made. Plus the music sounds very familiar... I think I've heard it in a flash game?

BTW, Glenn starred in a playboy, so as soon as I heard about that, I was there.

Even though it was the same charity being donated to, by affiliating it with vastly different groups they automatically made people associate it with the group they were supporting. If two different people, side by side, were collecting money to feed the homeless, would you likely hand your money to the one in the neural t-shirt, or the one wearing a shirt mocking Vegans?

As far as the amount of money collected, (I used to be involved in collecting for a charity on a daily basis as part of my previous career.), that can vary vastly from day to day. To get an accurate representation the experiment would need a longer test time so you could take an average of money donated.
Alcohol may have been a factor.

That is actually an interesting experiment. How about day one, you go out with a shirt that has something to do with bacon, and the next day you put on a shirt with the green V, then on day 3, wear a shirt that says "Meat is Murder". I'd be interested in seeing the results of that.

That's true. Maybe do it on the same day each week at the same time, such as a Friday or Saturday. People going places, getting home from work, etc.

It would have been better if they hadn't worn the "fiction" shirt*. Or if they had worn a shirt more offensive to atheists the other day.

*EDIT: I mean if they had worn a neutral shirt instead, not gone topless.
