The Positives and Negatives of Emmanuel Macron

Post by Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz »

Positives
-He is not Marine Le Pen
-Kim Yong-nam congratulated him on his election
-He was endorsed by Benoit Hamon and Barack Obama
-He supports the EU, but wants to reform it
-Wants to reform EU climate policy, in particular the EU-ETS, which is a malfunctioning cap and trade system.

Negatives
-He is not Benoit Hamon
-Would take the side of hunters and breeders over animal rights activists
-He is anti-nuclear power
-He is pro-bullfighting
-He is a liberal

If anybody has any other points, I will add them on.

Positive: wants to reform EU climate policy, in particular the EU-ETS, which is a malfunctioning cap and trade system.

More of a personal than political matter.

How does he compare with Le Pen on nuclear and animal rights? Is she more or less against those things?

It seems i completely mixed up the positions of the candidates on nuclear. Le Pen in pro-nuclear, so pronuclear that she wants to keep old plants open for way past their normal lifespan. She has about the same attitude towards nuclear as Trump does towards coal.
Here's an article that outlines their positions on nuclear:
https://nuclear-news.net/2017/05/05/marine-le-pen-and-emmanuel-macron-very-different-views-on-nuclear-power/
Macron would continue the Hollande government’s plan, set out in the framework 2015 law on energy transition related to green growth, to reduce nuclear energy’s share of French electricity generation from the current 75 percent down to 50 percent 2025.
Le Pen, by contrast, “promises to preserve the environment by breaking with an economic model based on wild trade globalization,” asserting that “real ecology” consists in producing, processing and consuming close to home.

On energy, she promises to modernize and secure the country’s aging fleet of nuclear reactors, in particular through a program proposed by flagship energy company Electricite de France (EDF) that would spend tens of billions of euros through 2025 to extend reactors’ lives beyond 40 years.

Macron said a strategic decision on extending reactors’ lives should wait for a report by the country’s Nuclear Safety Authority (l’Autorité de Sûreté Nucléaire), expected in 2018.

I see. That makes things much more complicated then, particularly added to Macron's anti-animal positions.
Is Le Pen pro animal rights?

That would mean closing down 20 nuclear plants, right?

On pesticides:
Macron’s platform, for instance, calls for a minimum of 50% organic food in cafeterias and a plan to phase out the use of pesticides.

It’s worth noting that Macron and Le Pen’s mutual call to end pesticide use in France comes even as the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) found last month that food consumed in the EU is either mostly pesticide-free or safely within legal limits, posing little to no risk to consumers.

By taking up the anti-pesticide mantle once carried by his rivals, Macron is making a play for left-wing votes but could also be committing himself to policies that do not ultimately serve the French public’s interests.
