Most people I know (but hey, my field is computer science) are fully aware of Ubuntu, but are yet not interested and somehow still use Windows. I understand your feeling that it should be more popular then it currently is, but when I think about my time with it I can also understand why it's not attractive to everyone (command-line is sometimes inevitable).
Yes, Macs are overpriced, but it is just awesome design, durability, reliability, etc. I personally like the software too much to make the switch to Linux; there's lots of quality (and sometimes domain specific) software on the Mac I couldn't live without.

I have been thinking about a not work related computer with Linux though, since I wouldn't necessarily need the software I most of the time use on my Mac. (There is still a place in my heart reserved for Linux)
You could impress your friends that use windows by becoming a student of the microsoft virtual academy, the best thing about it is; it's free!
Really check it out you'll be thanking me later.

The nice thing with ubuntu is you don't have to uninstall your current operating system, you can keep your current operating system and just add ubuntu on to your computer, you can use both that is the beauty of ubuntu. Being a computer scientist(I prefer the term computer technician) you could get much coding benefits by using ubuntu, you can program your own codes your way.

I'm currently using Dolphin Browser as my main web browser. Also while you can install 3rd party apps on iPhone you cannot make them default. In other words if you use Safari to find directions it'll direct you to Apple Maps, if you use Google Chrome it'll direct you to Google Maps.

Once again not a problem with android.

There's unfortuntely a little bad in everything good
there are many ways to see this situation.

1) would you buy an apple from a convicted killer? (assuming that the apple came from a source other than the murder) I see nothing immoral with doing such a thing, your $$$'s vote for the apple not the murder.

2) compare the morality of opposing means. If this killer was continuing to kill it may be better to buy the apple from someone who's stance on killing is less morally questionable.

if i where to buy boca's mock meat, than i would be voting for the product not the company. if however there are two ways of getting mock meat, and one was from a supplier who does not sell non vegan products, i would but it from the latter every time.

even when you apply your theory to apple it remains questionable, if apple was selling products that are unlikely to have come from appealing worker conditions than i would consider buying that product. I do sincerely hope that apple sticks to its word when they claim they will produce more hardware in places like America and Australia, however I remain doubtful.
vegan: to exclude—as far as is practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for any purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment.

I don't think there is a cell phone company that doesn't some how branch off into a factory in China. Nokia is a great company the technology is made in Finland and employs many Finn's but the phones are made in China, just like the technology for Apple is made in America and employs many Americans but phones are manufactured in China. What about Apple's product RED that has donated to date 70 million dollars towards the fight against aids?
I would also be worried about the privacy issues with apple.
Apple's site claims they recycle responsibly.

PrincessPeach wrote: Why not make it look nice and appealing, people love the apple design but they're paying waaay too much. If everyone knew about Ubuntu's free operating system people could stop spending thousands of dollars on new macs or any computer for that matter & they could do what brim is talking about and recycle an old computer/ phone ! You really aren't paying for the laptop or the phone you are paying for the new operating system.

Ubuntu's free operating system is amazing and people should know about it and utilize it!
No you're not paying for only the software. Have you seen the new Mac Pro? Try to create a computer with the same specs for that price. People complain about how Apple is too expensive and in the long run really isn't.

Any software/hardware problems Apple has it covered with it's Amazing online and in store customer support. Ubuntu doesn't come close especially with it's forums.

Apple has sold their operating systems up until OS X Mavericks. If the only problem you have with OS X is that it comes in a Mac computer then just buy the Snow Leopard disk off of eBay and make a Hackintosh.

Ubuntu may be great for those who have even the slightest knowledge of UNIX but when it really comes down to it, people don't want to go through learning curve. People want software the works out of the box, and OS X provides that.

Just came across this article:
http://techpinions.com/made-in-china-wh ... wrong/5140
What do you think? Is buying Apple products actually ethical, or just an excuse to justify our 'luxury' expenses?

I don't have a problem with buying things made in China. But I also don't waste money, which I prefer to spend on other things which do a lot more good.

Well, I don't particular get a good feeling about buying stuff from sweatshops. But I'm not sure whether you're actually helping the workers by boycotting the products, or by actually buying it. The intention behind boycotting is to make a statement that the work situation should be improved, but on the other side you do make sure they can have a job and earn a 'living' at all.
