Strange experience replenishing b12 levels - anyone else?

Post by F Schrager »

Hello ! I have been vegan for 5 years. I never made sure that I consumed adequate levels of b12 - so I became deficient. Over the past year and a half I have been trying to replenish my levels of b12. However, it has some very strange effects on my mind.

Positive: my mind is more agile at quick-thinking activities; i feel SO much happier - sometimes even a feeling of euphoria (but this can be worrying as it seems to make me overoptimistic and not cautious enough).

Negative: Memory is the main thing - I feel like I forget how to do learnt activities - essay writing, spelling - it feels a bit like my brain has been reset. I also sometimes feel quite spaced out.

I've done a load of internet searches trying to find any post about a similar experience or some advice - but have had no luck. Please let me know if you have had any strange experiences - even if not the same - when trying to replenish b12 levels. And, of course, any advice would be great!

Thanks

Hi F Shrager. Welcome to our forum.

My short term memory often fails me, as well as remembering names and faces of famous people. I am 50 and I don't remember having these issues in my youth.

I doubt this has anything to do with B12 consumption as I have been taking regular supplements for over 10 years.

In my case, the memory loss is likely to do with aging, and-or excessive alcohol consumption.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

To the OP- are you sure you became deficient in five years? Did you get a diagnosis? Could be something else and a bunch of coincidences. Those don't sound like normal effects of B-12.

At only 50, and because your cadiovascular system is probably in good health as a vegan (you probably haven't been suffering small unnoticed subclinical strokes affecting your cognition due to cholesterol levels)... it's probably the alcohol. ;)
