Monthly Update #2 (September, 2020) LOTS OF UPDATES!

Post by thebestofenergy »

Hello everyone, I hope you’re all doing well.

This month, on the Wiki, we were able to progress things significantly.

Besides smaller modifications and additions made throughout the Wiki, including, finally, having put the Table of Contents contents on the side bar of the Wiki for easier access and more intuitive navigation, we did quite a few major things.

1 - We created a new section to present the main staples of food in vegan diets and sort them according to nutrition density per kcal, allowing you to see where you can get the best nutrition for the calories you eat wiki/index.php/Common_Whole-food_Staples- hint: peas, oat bran and fava beans really are that good.

2 - We wrote a new section dedicated to JACC Saturated Fat Review, where a lot of research is presented and goes in-depth to address a review published by the JACC that would be in favor of saturated fats, covering all their arguments.

3 - We started a new section about Sentience, explaining more clearly what sentience is, where it’s found, and why it matters, covering both the scientific and the philosophical side. We’ll keep expanding this section.

4 - Many more new tasty recipes have been added to the ‘Food and Recipes’ section, from generic dishes, to salads, to sweets (you can find them all in the Index of Recipes) - more on point 7, 8 and 9.

5 - We wrote a new section dedicated to palm oil, addressing more clearly the problems with it ([wiki/index.php/Palm_Oil]).

6 - We made a new section for the Cost of Food],where we put an estimated cost for most of the available foods (mainly influenced by the US market). Besides being a useful tool for budgeting, this has been done for point 7 to be possible.

7 - We updated all the recipes in the Wiki with their costs per serving! You can now know how much your budget will be if you follow the recipes on the Wiki. We even included cost per 2000 kcal for each recipe.

8 - We updated all the recipes in the Wiki with their nutritional value per serving! You can now know how to manage your daily eating if you follow the recipes on the Wiki. To find the nutrition facts written, simply go to a recipe, under the costs per serving.

9 - We made a new index of recipes, but this time featuring all the nutrient value per serving of recipes!
[wiki/index.php/Index_of_Recipes_by_Nutritional_Values]
It’s a tool that lets you easily see how to reach the daily value of any nutrient you might be missing in a certain day.
You can do so by simply sorting for the highest quantity of X nutrient you’re missing, finding a recipe that you like among those that are high in X nutrient, and making sure that you’re covering the %amount that you’re missing (without having to do any kind of research).

10 - On top of that, because new vegans often struggle to find replacements for animal products, we have started 'How do I make it vegan?'. This is a page dedicated to find and learn about easy home-made (healthy) replacements for common animal products.

11 - We have also opened an Instagram account, where we’ll post food pictures of recipes and other stuff, including some vegan memes/comics here and there (we’ll try posting everyday). https://www.instagram.com/philosophvegan/

Point 7, 8 and 9 will make it so the recipe section won’t be just that.
We’re not just trying to create a book of recipes, but a way for people to be able to plan their eating (both in terms of money and nutrients needed) comfortably with just 1 source online, and therefore making the transition to veganism easier than ever.

We’re happy that our ‘book of recipes’, and everything regarding it, is growing and being improved at a consistent pace, and that science concerning nutrition is always being added to address concerns.

The next update will be on Halloween. In the meantime, stay tuned for Halloween-themed recipes and articles!
