Heh, I was just about to post another clip of LWT. Although I absolutely love the show, this one upset me.

That is upsetting. I hate when comedy is used to deflect and ignore moral problems.

John Oliver normally seems like a very rational and moral person, it is just one more of those cases. Speaking of those cases, I think I might email the Atheist Experience, I would be very interested to hear what Matt or some of the others think about this, as they all seem to be meat-eaters.

They always seemed pretty indifferent about those things. Possibly like Dawkins, they just kind of ignore it.

I actually didn't even know Ayn Rand was a thing until you (brimstoneSalad) started to ridicule her Objectivism, and rightly so.

Edit:

Well, sadly enough Dillahunty isn't particularly rational on this subject. See here (watch out, it's possible you're going to cry):

Ouch, that was some serious ignorance on nutrition. Sounds like he buys into the conspiracy theory nuttery on paleo diets.

The way he discounts actual health authorities that understand the subject and the research, he might as well be a creationist, completely ignorant of evolution, claiming that evolution and every scientific body that supports it is false because there's no crocoduck.

We rely on experts, and the opinions of these experts because most of us don't have the time or education needed to understand the complex biochemical systems that make up human physiology, or the statistical models and research that proves causation between certain elements of diet and health.

Somebody needs to tell him he's being a fucking hypocrite for criticizing creationists for ignoring scientific consensus and touting their ignorance instead, while doing the same thing himself on something he's completely ignorant on because it suits him.
Either he cares about truth like he claims, or he doesn't. He can't have it both ways.

Anybody in the states, with a phone?

It's sad the caller didn't point out all the mistakes he and Tracy were making. Multiple naturalistic fallacies, speciesism endorsement, false information on nutrition and health (somewhat stated like it's an opinion): it's all in there.

I recently saw someone else call in about veganism (but Matt wasn't present), but that didn't end so well either.

Aren't you living in the states by the way? I'm sure you can handle him about this.

Yeah, it's hard to do that when you're on the spot like that. Hindsight is 20/20.

He did the nutrition one, but Matt just contradicted it with that bullshit. It's hard to respond to conspiracy theory nuts. I would have been stunned, personally, I don't know if I would have been able to reply out of shock.

Do you have a link?

Well, it's not that hard to point out that because we evolved a particular way, we can't know something to be healthy. You actually have to study that through the use of science, and Dillahunty should know that. He's essentially rejecting science because it doesn't seem to fit with an intuition he already has.

Starts around minute 39. But now that I see it again, there's actually no defense here, just changing the subject to some economical principle.

Oh, I really didn't know. You're regularly citing articles and government stuff from the USA and things like that, so I made a wrong assumption there.
