Yes it can, and it likely will if you live in the place where one religion dominates.
The anti-intellectual nature of Conservative and Other Evangelical Christian Churches makes a good point for them to demonize non-believers of any kind.
A moderate/liberal religious person would not likely to "witness" for the Deity. In Oklahoma State University, where I went the majority of groups were religious and often homophobic and "pro life".
Also, the anti-homophobic groups existed as well as one secular group.
Technically, the non-religious denominations are protected by a First Amendment but the non-religious gatherings within educational institution in a place dominated by one religion may lead to problems.
I would stay away from simpleton Bible Thumping groups and just ignore them. Only the hateful and harmful activities should be confronted such as homophobia, anti-abortion, aggressive behavior due scientific misunderstanding, Hell-fire preaching and so forth.
