Interesting topic. I listen to an overnight radio show when I'm driving late called Coast to Coast am, and they touch on this from time to time. (The show is 98% bs though, but it can be entertaining.) I believe the History channel does a series called "Ancient Aliens" that sometimes posits that the old "Gods" were just an advanced alien species, but it has the same problems as the "Coast" show, a little bit of historical fact mixed with some interesting/possibly plausible theories, then a lot of obvious crap.

The earth is around 4.5 billion years old, but we've only began making real leaps in technology the last couple of hundred years, so I would imagine if an older species evolved somewhere else, with less in-fighting than our current species, the technology they possess could be so far advanced they would have god-like powers compared to us.

I could see a scenario like- "So I created a bunch of animals with the life ray on this little planet across the galaxy, gave them some time to evolve a little bit, and came back to check on them. THEY"RE EATING THE DAMN ANIMALS!! Turn your back for a few million years, and look what happens. I got the hell out of there, they can figure it out for themselves. Oh, and just to screw with them, I visited a few random people and convinced them they were prophets! Hilarious!"
Alcohol may have been a factor.
