When I was trying to explain to my family why I was an atheist (which failed horribly due to their ignorance) I brought up multiple studies from Harvard scientist proving evolution. Afterwards I asked them what they thought of the evidence and that simply replied "Anyone can say anything" implying that they're no longer sure about the credibility of Harvard researchers (I used Harvard studies since they would say "Don't believe anything you read off the internet" crap with me.).

Being a manic/depressive my mental illness kind of helps to keep my skepticism in line. I'm prone to auditory and visual hallucinations so I know my brain can fuck with me. Most visual hallucinations are fairly easy to distinguish as they are usually bizarre, but some of the auditory ones can be tricky. Though I don't remember ever having a "spiritual" hallucination of any kind.

That's a really awesome way of looking at it- taking something that would trouble many people, but using it to understand the world better. Reminds me a little of the portrayal of John Nash in the movie A Beautiful Mind (totally different matter, but regards to hallucinations).

I was at my annual Evolution conference (I'm a biologist), in NC Durham. A group of creationist surrounded us and screamed biblical stuff all day. They then started distributing bananas (I assume because we are monkeys?). I finally got the courage to challenge one (he was screaming how Jesus cured all these people etc...), so I asked "why is he not doing saving anyone nowadays"? He was infuriated and just started screaming more biblical crap (although he said "this young lady has a great question...). It was fun, I have to do this more often
