Re: Albums Released In 2015 That You're Enjoying Or Expectin
Sorry for taking so long. Here we go:
I listened to this song a few times and there were some elements I really liked although it was generally to heavy for my taste. They seem heavily influenced by Queen which is one of my favorite bands.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's a song from my favourite Power Metal band that's from Germany called Blind Guardian. You may've noticed I posted about their new album from this year in the thread earlier, and here's a song from their new album. Also, pretty good with lots of Queen sound.

The guy has a good voice but this is too heavy for me

This is definitely more my type of music. I liked this song and checked out a few of their others. Hemfärd was my favorite. How did you discover a band singing in Swedish?
[quote="Here's an Atmospheric Doom Metal song from a French band called Lethian Dreams. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E8ihG3coGs/quote]
Another excellent song.
[quote="Here's a Post-Rock/Shoegaze song from a French band called Alcest. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waGDKnFv_Vg/quote]
This song was a bit drawn out but still quite good.
[quote="Here's an Avant-garde Metal song from my favourite band Sigh, who are from Japan. This song has harsh vocals, and I would definitely understand if you found it off-putting, but I did so as well when I first heard harsh vocals like this, but after first beginning to tolerate them, and then learning to actually enjoy them it's now opened me up to a lot of music I hold among my favourites nowadays. Anyways here's the song to at least have a try at. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dqKbzRqc5g/quote]
Not bad. There were some elements I liked but also lots of heavy stuff I didn't appreciate.
[quote="Sigh made an album back in 2005 with only clean vocals, but they're not a typical type of clean vocals really and could use some getting used to, but here's a song from that album as well. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dd8_0v2EXI/quote]
Didn't like this one.
[quote="Here's a band with some harsh vocals but that also uses clean vocals. Their genre is said to be best described as Psychedelic Black Metal. I'm unsure if this particular song best shows it, but I've heard them described as "The Doors meets Black Metal." - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOQhnQerRfo/quote]
Didn't really like this. I was quite hopeful as I am a big Doors fan but I really didn't hear it.
[quote="Here's a song from a Finnish Melodic Death Metal band called Wintersun that later incorporated massive amounts of synths and orchestrations into their music. I've heard many people who've said they used to dislike Metal express how much this album/song opened them up to the genre. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMbFu457jGs/quote]
Makes me think of an 80s metal band called Saga which used synths and orchestrations and would often bridge that same gap. Check out Wind Him Up if you haven't heard of them. The Intro was pretty good but then I hated the song until about 7.00 when it suddenly became very good.

A few nice elements but generally not my thing.
[quote="Here's an instrumental Black Metal song, so you don't need to worry about the vocals being dissonant. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=by-oN-TpVUU/quote]
I generally get bored by instrumental songs and this was no exception. The ones I like can be counted on one hand.

Again, nice intro but then I got bored

Nice epic song with some Queen elements as well.
All of this reminded me a bit of Nightwish. Do you like them as well? Anyways, thanks for taking the time to introduce me to these songs. I will have to give most of the songs a few more listens. WIll let you know if I change my mind about any of them.

It's okay, you said you would get to it within this month and you did. Plus, it's generally better to take all the time you need for something rather than rushing to do it when you aren't quite ready. So, I don't mind at all.Jebus wrote:Sorry for taking so long. Here we go:

Yeah, Blind Guardian have spoken about how Queen is one of their major influences, especially for the vocalist and lead guitarist of the band. I was actually a bit surprised that you found it a bit too heavy, (even more so since you seem to have enjoyed Hemfard by Manegarm, which to me is quite a lot heavier in many parts.) and I think I might've expected a "too heavy" reaction if I were to give you a recommendation of some Death Metal or Doom Metal, but not Blind Guardian.
Could you specify how the heaviness bothered you, or which sections were the least enjoyable? One thing I've found on some occasions in the past for myself, is I find the heaviness of some songs may be bothersome to me if the volume of the lower pitched instruments interferes with my ability to properly hear the high pitch notes. I used to experience this in some ways which really bothered me, and found this experience exacerbated when I was nasally congested or had issues with my sinuses. Since going Vegan I actually found my congestion to greatly reduce and only kinda get it bad enough to interfere with my hearing when I get sick. Also, about a year ago my doctor recommended for me to stop taking a prescription medication I had taken for a while, and I've found ever after a few months of being off of it my perception of higher notes has only gotten better. One thing I found that helped with being able to still enjoy music when I was congested is lowering the volume to a point where the loudness of the heavier parts didn't interfere as much with my enjoyment of the higher pitch parts.
I don't know if you've had any issues like I had, but I'd recommend to maybe try adjusting the volume if you happen to find that it helps with the heavier parts not sounding so abrasive.
Since you said you enjoyed their stuff a bit, I'm gonna recommend you a couple more of their songs that are maybe even a bit less heavy. (those two songs I would say are among their lighter stuff.)
Here's "The Maiden and the Minstrel Knight" by Blind Guardian, (You may recognize the album title from somewhere... )

Here's "Curse My Name" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5rugwt6Te8
Also a heavier Blind Guardian song just for the sake of seeing how you'll like it. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSjLEJbsHrI
This is more understandable for me, it is quite heavy for Power Metal, and actually takes many influences from outside Power Metal in a way that it really isn't 100% Power Metal. (Power Metal is probably one of the most accessible Metal sub-genres along with Heavy Metal.)Jebus wrote:The guy has a good voice but this is too heavy for meDream Sphere wrote:Here's a Swedish Power Metal band that has a vocalist similar to the one from Blind Guardian, they're called Persuader. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIge-101ot4
Yeah, that song is from an EP they put out in 2006 called Urminnes Havd - The Forest Sessions (there's an accent above the "a" in "Havd" in the title of the album, but my keyboard can't easily type letters with accents) that's pure Folk music. All of Manegarm's other music is either Folk Metal, Black Metal or different balances of the two genres mixed. Which is why I was surprised you liked Hemfard, since it gets pretty heavy at some points and there's a fair amount of harsh vocals used in the song. The album the song Hemfard is from is called Vredens Tid, and that album along with Vargstenen are my two favourite albums of Manegarm's, though I actually like all of their albums. Here's their metal-archives page if you need help finding out more about them (metal-archives is basically a Metal music wikipedia/online-encyclopedia) - http://www.metal-archives.com/bands/M%C3%A5negarm/985Jebus wrote:This is definitely more my type of music. The way I discovered Manegarm was by randomly picking bands from lists of bands on metal-archives and then checking out a couple of their songs on youtube. I also frequent other forums (mostly music forums) where I've discovered many interesting bands. Some I've discovered through recommendations of others, sometimes I'll also check out a video of a song in the recommended for you part of youtube. I've spent a lot of time looking for new music online, so it's just sorta happened that I've discovered and grown to like a lot of stuff. Also, unlike conventional radio, the internet allows a place for exposure of lesser known bands that are from genres and sing in languages not normally in music consumed by the mainstream in my country, so that's how I was able to discover a band that sung in Swedish in my country. (I've also discovered many other bands that sing in different languages, but due to my keyboard not being great at typing certain letters or symbols, this has made it hard for me to discover some bands that use Russian, Asian, or other languages in their names that don't relate too much to the Latin derived alphabets.)
A website called last.fm also helped me discover a lot of music I wouldn't have otherwise. It works in a way so that you create a profile, put into your profile the music you like to listen to and you can access different music stations that will recommend you music either on what you already like/have in your library, or music that's similar to a particular band, genre, or defining category of sorts.
Since it seems you may like some Folk Metal by your liking of Hemfard, here're five other Folk Metal songs.
"Token of Time" by Ensiferum - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZc5le5QsF8
"Celebration - Son of Nuadh Amhach" by Bran Barr - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rjMAyjnRL0
"Miri It Is" by Forefather - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WeGuDQ5gq-c
"Farewell" by Saor - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wki3VYamF9E
"Stone of Remembrance" by Gallowbraid - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vDOl1uC7J2A
That's cool that you liked that. I don't know a lot of other stuff that's very similar to this, but I do know some things pretty similar just maybe not enough to be as likable to you as this was. Check out the rest of that album, at least.Jebus wrote:Another excellent song.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's an Atmospheric Doom Metal song from a French band called Lethian Dreams. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E8ihG3coGs
I guess I'll show you a song that's also Atmospheric Doom Metal, but has a more spacey sound to it.
Here's "Falling to Apathy" by Ixion. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWqyy4axndk
I also don't know a lot of other stuff that's really similar to this, so here's a Doom Metal song that's actually mostly really Folk music, but with Doom Metal, Black Metal, and Death Metal mixed in. I'm guessing you'll find the majority of the song tolerable at least, and hopefully likable.Jebus wrote:This song was a bit drawn out but still quite good.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's a Post-Rock/Shoegaze song from a French band called Alcest. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waGDKnFv_Vg
Here's "Sounds of Pain..." by Uaral - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTjvVWXTlKU
Hmm, I'm also a little confused how you found the first song I showed you too heavy, but I don't mean to cause offence by that, I'm just expressing what I was expecting being fairly different than how you actually saw the song as a tiny bit surprising.Jebus wrote:Not bad. I guess you could maybe try these two songs by them, I won't keep recommending stuff by them to you if they still don't seem to be appealing to you, but I'll give you two more recs and leave it at that if you're opinion of their songs doesn't change.
Here's "Gavotte Grim" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSB4_4e67w0
and here's "A Sunset Song" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIEaRXiTnH0
That's understandable for me. I wasn't even sure if they really sounded too much like The Doors anyways, and was going by what I'd heard another commenter say. I still like Hail Spirit Noir's sound, but I can definitely understand how someone else may not like it.Jebus wrote:Didn't really like this. I'll check that band out tomorrow, for sure. I found this song as with other songs that are pretty complex with so many layers of instruments takes a few listens to really get into. I've had some similar listens of the song that sounds exactly like how you described finding some interest in the beginning and then it dropping until right around that point you specified. I've had other times where I've enjoyed it immensely all the way through, and it was almost like a different song in some parts, which was interesting.Jebus wrote:Makes me think of an 80s metal band called Saga which used synths and orchestrations and would often bridge that same gap. I know it's a long song so don't force yourself to keep re-listening to it if it still doesn't click after a while.
Here's another song by them from the same album, which I think you may enjoy more. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjOvmAJ6na0
I can understand not liking it, but I'm curious in what particular ways did it not interest you? Did it just lack anything really engaging while otherwise being passable and not too offensive? Or were there some parts you really didn't like? Any particular instrument or section you found off-putting? (If you can't remember it well, it's okay and you don't need to feel compelled to re-listen to it for the sake of giving me a clearer explanation. If it really just didn't interest you, if you choose to reply to this post, I wouldn't have any problem if you didn't reply to this part.)Jebus wrote:A few nice elements but generally not my thing.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's an Avant-garde Metal band from Norway called Solefald, I don't believe this has any harsh vocals, though I might need to re-listen to be sure, I know it does have clean vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9aSymmizxM

That's interesting. Do you find a large importance in music being lyrics? For myself, I've found I can enjoy instrumental music just as much or even more than some parts with singing. Of course I like some singing in songs a lot, but I guess I'd say my favourite singing in songs I enjoy just as much as my favourite instrumentation I've heard in songs. I've never been big on following a bands lyrics. I do appreciate good lyrics but they aren't necessary, and are sometimes fairly hard to come by in the music I instrumentally enjoy.
I can understand that. I only listen to this band on occasion because I need to be in a specific want for their specific sound to actually really enjoy them.Jebus wrote:Again, nice intro but then I got boredDream Sphere wrote:Here's an Epic Doom Metal band called Candlemass. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmV9MsFnUbk

Actually I really don't care for Nightwish, I can see your comparison in them being similar to a number of these songs I showed you since Nightwish is Power/Symphonic Metal, but they never clicked with me. Other Power Metal that hasn't clicked with me is stuff like Kamelot, Edguy and Avantasia. None of which I like, and a lot of which I dislike. Blind Guardian is by far my favourite Power Metal band, but the other ones I recommended I also like.Jebus wrote:All of this reminded me a bit of Nightwish. Do you like them as well? Re: Albums Released In 2015 That You're Enjoying Or Expectin
So, I've been enjoying Melechesh's new album, and I think it definitely tops their previous album in my books. It's probably also their most consistent, but maybe not quite their best. It's just almost about on the same level as Emissaries, and Sphynx. The album has quite good production which makes their Mesopotamian-folk influences stand out in an even more interesting way than their previous albums may have. - This is one of my favourites from the album. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPQhPfOkAcw
I also have gotten through most of Visigoth's debut album, and I have to say I'm kinda disappointed. It wasn't quite as consistent as I was hoping for, and I found some instances where I thought they could have performed some takes better. There were good songs on the album, but not too many really got me excited. That being said, "Blood Sacrifice," which was a new song they made for the new album, is excellent and maybe even their best song so far. The production is pretty large, heavy, and dynamic sounding, and they've also seemed to kinda elicit a feeling of them jamming together as a band in the songs more so than the previous releases of theirs. I think a good example to compare that, can be taken from comparing the original version of "Creature of Desire," from their Final Spell EP, to the new version on the album. I appreciate the new version, but I found a few sections were lacking compared to the original, and also that the kind of hypnotic, almost atmospheric feeling the original gave me had kinda been lost.
I've heard a couple tracks from Enslaved's new album and it's got me pretty interested in getting the album to check out the rest. I hadn't heard much from them before, but this actually has also got me to want to check out the rest of their discography too. Anyone who's curious should check out the long version of "One Thousand Years of Rain."
Also, Sigh recently announced that their new album Graveward will be released on April the 13th. I can't wait to go out and get it, because they've never disappointed me, and the demo version of a song I've heard from it sounded great too, which gets my hopes up even higher.
They also announced the track-listing and the duration of each song, there're ten songs which seems good enough, and most are in the four or five minute range, with one being seven, and a couple others around three minutes. Oh, also the album cover art is great too, and I'm glad they were able to get a different artist which could make album covers as good as the artist who made their previous two album covers, which I also really liked. Here's the metal-archives page for the album if anyone's interested - http://www.metal-archives.com/albums/Si ... ard/498792

Again thanks for your efforts and sorry for taking so long.
I often find it difficult to pinpoint what it is that I like and don't like about a particular song. However, would I always loved about Queen was their ability to mix the tempos. Often there would be a short piano solo which would allow the singer to showcase his voice. A piano mix up would be nice but I don't hear any in these songs.
Indeed I did. The beginning was promising and it even reminded me of an old brilliant band called Kayak. However, it soon became repetitive with no tempo shifts or solos.
This had a lot more variation while still having the Kayak feel, including the flutes, and a very rich renaissance feel. This was a keeper.

Nice Thriller like intro but soon became boring.

Some nice melodies in there but not enough to get me a boner.

Loved the bagpipes but missed the tempo shifts and musical variation.

Boring. Nothing really happened here.
Nice tempo shift with the violin in the middle. I just wish the vocalist would show some tempo shifts as well. Some of my favorite singers, like Fish from Marillion would whisper upon the slow parts before bursting onto the heavier parts. That's the type of shit I like.Dream Sphere wrote:"Farewell" by Saor - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wki3VYamF9E
Yeah, this is a great song. It contains lots of the variety, piano shifts and other surprises I mentioned earlier.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's "Sounds of Pain..." by Uaral - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTjvVWXTlKU

Another excellent song. Full of variety. Just gets a bit drawn out at the end.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's "Gavotte Grim" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSB4_4e67w0
A mixture of some nice elements and some pretty obnoxious screaming. All in all, a good song although I feel it could have been better. The shift at 4 minutes was really weird and didn't fit in at all.Dream Sphere wrote:and here's "A Sunset Song" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIEaRXiTnH0
Excellent intro. Actually the whole song is excellent. Are the songs getting better or is it because I am on my 7th beer?Dream Sphere wrote:Here's another song by them from the same album, which I think you may enjoy more. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wjOvmAJ6na0

I'm really starting to dig this shit now. I'm not a big fan of the singer but this song has some great instrumentals.Dream Sphere wrote:Here's another Avant-garde Metal song, but it sounds very different. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnOh47h_6H0
Loved the intro on the 1st song. The singer sounded very 80s. not so great in the end.Dream Sphere wrote:Yeah, these guys are good, and quite accessible. Here's a couple more songs by them.

2nd song is ok. lacks a bit of flow

The piano part starting around 2.10 to about 3.50 was really nice but the rest was pretty annoying.

This never really took off. Perhaps I am not a power metal fan.

Ouch, that was hard listening to. Maybe it got better but I had to stop it around 2 min.
