I can imagine somebody managing to be even more incompetent without being fired by claiming to have a disability and frequently talking about his or her father being a lawyer and complaining about how they sued the last place that fired him/her for the disability for a million dollars and won but they didn't end up getting much of anything because the place went bankrupt.
Dishonesty tends to backfire, though.
Best to just be honestly lazy and do as little as possible. Probably like most employees at these places, but being smarter about it so you look really industrious when it comes to something that doesn't make them any profit -- like making the toilet sparkle by cleaning it for an hour then showing the manager with pride how clean it is -- and drag your feet extra slowly when it comes to something that would actually improve sales.
And of course despite the industrious cleaning of random things when the manager is watching, just being super messy in general so overall you contribute more mess than cleanliness.

I feel like that's a hard line to draw because If I need to be bad at my job to help the animals, how bad am I required to be in a non-vegan job?

I don't have much to add on the ethical/philosophical/economics side because others seems to have that ground pretty well covered. I just want to add my experience from a few years back.
After graduating university I was unemployed for a month or two whilst trying to find work in vegan restaurants or cafes. Unfortunately, the demand for these jobs in my city was actually quite high - my applications basically amounted to firing an email directly to the owner or manager. I tried pretty much every vegan cafe, restaurant and grocery store in my city. I didn't have any luck. I ended up landing a barista job at a sandwich/coffee chain which only lasted about 3 months (shortlived for various other reasons, too). I do have to say, making dairy milk drinks and serving meat products in sandwiches and such did actually bum me out quite a lot. It was even amplified at times by the amount of hot food we had to throw away after some hours for healthy and safety reasons. I got scalded once for giving the homeless people outside the food we were meant to chuck away. I worked in other non-vegan cafes after that and those feelings subsided somewhat - I needed the money and I understood I wasn't increasing the demand for animal products simply by working at those places...
Just bare that in mind! What kind of vegan establishments do you have in your Maryland town? Can you try apply at one of these places, even if it means part time and move on from there? Best of luck!

@joji
Thank you for your input. My area is more conservative so they aren't really a very vegan friendly area but I'm not in any need to have a job right this moment since I live with my parents and they still provide for me. Ill keep on looking tho.
