In the U.S. from what I've read, a lot of the Atheist hate comes from the Cold War era. The Soviet Union was the enemy and communism was viewed as Atheist. It was around this same time "In God We Trust" was added to our currency and "Under God" was added to the pledge of allegiance. Religion has had basically free reign since the end of World War II.
