You may not realize, but marriage is a controversial topic in skeptic circles. Seems like a fair question.ThatNerdyScienceGirl wrote: Because I want to, and love the person I am marrying. So like I said, what is the purpose of this question?
I know sometimes there are tax reasons, and things like being able to share insurance. Getting married to somebody you'll be staying with for a few years (love is irrelevant) can be very practical. But then, why not go to the court house and do it tomorrow, rather than waiting over a year if you're aiming for practical?
Romantic love is usually highly irrational, so the probing questions of rational minds may not be welcome, but they still seem quite fair even if unpopular. There are a few topics that atheists can be as defensive about as religious folk are about god; romantic "love" is one of them.
This topic is too frustrating for me to discuss, so I'll leave it to Jebus.

Jebus: Just be careful, the validity of romantic love and marriage is molten lava, you may get flamed into next year for asking innocent questions.
