I grew up before the days of mixed martial arts so the schoolyard discussions were often about which traditional style would be most effective in a real fight. I do think such a discussion is analogous to which style of high jumping would be the most effective. Many of the traditional styles have huge shortcomings in street fights; wrestlers turn their back to their opponents on the ground, boxers have a too large gap between their hands etc. The different striking styles also have different ways of punching and kicking and I simply believe that some styles have more efficient ways of doing so than others.

You are right to think that, there is a difference between traditional and superior systems. Lets take in ninjutsu for instance, i ve practiced it for about three years and i quit because they did not teach me self defence, the blows and hits are very, very dangerous. Its because this particular one did not focused on combat, not to mention honor...it was based on deception...and its a total opposite to chinese philosophy.

After that i approached Bruce Lee s jeet kune do which was in fact the mma you talk about...since he spoke that the ”style” should incorporate only what works, not what it looks fancy. He also argued about the limitations of the traditional styles but also they do not lack importance...they can offer a background at least...better than nothing.
