There's a variable you aren't considering here. Legal guns would be more expensive, but illegal guns would still be in supply. Many guns used in crimes are stolen, so that would also factor into the price jump variable.

The latest young person to go on a killing spree in Austin, TX didn't use a gun. If he placed his bombs in crowded arenas instead, I'm sure his kill count would have been closer to those done with guns.

Legal guns would probably be cheaper, due to large supply that's sitting in warehouses and harder to sell. Just harder to buy/take more time to get due to background checks etc.

Motivation to steal legal guns would be increased.

There's no perfect solution. It would take time for legal gun ownership to decrease. Public service announcements getting people to lock up their guns might help.
