Vegan message board for support on vegan related issues and questions.
Topics include philosophy, activism, effective altruism, plant-based nutrition, and diet advice/discussion whether high carb, low carb (eco atkins/vegan keto) or anything in between.
Meat eater vs. Vegan debate welcome, but please keep it within debate topics.
I like eating animals and their products. I just like eating meat. I just had cheese two hours ago as part of an afternoon snack. i eat eggs in my sandwich or on my breakfast plate. I'd love to try tofu and other vegan foods, though. I've tried almond milk and I really like it, but it's too sweet for me to substitute for cow milk. I absolutely love almond biscuits and vegan brownies. My parents are so concerned that I get enough calories in me that they force me to drink whole milk. Asking if I could be vegan or even vegetarian would be a little crazy at the moment, but when I'm older I would enjoy being a vegetarian.
There are unsweetened versions.^
There's also soy milk but I've never had that. I like soy yogurt, so I assume soy milk tastes good.
There's also rice milk and coconut milk and flax seed milk and hemp milk etc. etc. etc.

Oh, really? I'd love to try the unsweetened versions. My favorite yogurt hasn't been tasting the same in the last 3 years or so, I might have to swap it for some soy yogurt.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to trying some this weekend.

Keep in mind that you'll probably have to get used to it. When you switch from full milk to skim milk, skim milk is very watery until you get used to it, this is even more so with soy milk.

Ahh, yeah. I was thinking so. Maybe I should have low fat cow milk first and then gradually make my way to soy milk?

You can buy canned coconut milk (100%, not the watered down stuff- avoid anything that says it's lite), and use that to add some extra fat and thickness to the soy milk. The fat in coconut is still saturated, but probably healthier than dairy fat.
Then you can wean yourself off, adding less each time.
I wouldn't buy the coconut milk in the cartons as milk substitutes, they're mostly water, and have very little protein in them.
Are you under-weight? Is that what your parents are worried about?

Add some of the coconut milk into the soy milk? Hm.
And no, I'm a healthy weight, although in the last year or two I've had a much worse appetite.

Why are your parents forcing you to eat unhealthy food then?[/quote]
Yeah, it's your body. They shouldn't force you to eat unhealthy things just as much as they shouldn't force you to smoke.
If you really want to go veg*n, just tell your parents why you want it (ethical, environmental, health, whatever resonates most with you) and try to assure them that you won't be missing out on any nutrients. You could refer them to people like Joel Fuhrman, Neal Barnard or Michael Greger to have an authority voice support you.
