Favorite games played when you were a kid

Post by Neptual »

What was your favorite game that you played when you were kid? I remember playing Pokemon Sapphire a lot, and in fact still have my old gameboy color games (sadly not the gameboy color itself).

I remember that my first games I played where on my dad's mobile phone. It was a Nokia.
The first game I bought was Fallout 3 for PC. I couldn't have made a better choice at the time.
If we're not talking about console/PC games, then my favourite game was YuGiOh (the famous card game).

I've participated in Yugioh real life tournaments aswell (I've spent lots of money and days on it), and now I'm on Dueling Network too! :)
If you want to add me, my name is thebestofenergy, surprisingly enough.
However, I'm not currently into Yugioh, I've left it for quite a while. I'd probably pick it up again soon though; the urges to theorycraft new decks and to update my knowledge with the new cards/mechanics that have come out are overwhelming.

I love collectable card games in theory. Not as much in practice.

In theory, it's awesome art work, and interesting and flexible mechanics allowing you to build great strategic decks. Plus a good business model that subtly encourages people to buy more cards to diversify their strategies.

In practice... rapid obsolescence of existing cards and decks as more and more powerful versions come out- not increasing strategy so much as sales. Being forced to buy regularly, or never win a game again @_@

Are there any that break that mold?

I used to be pretty big into chess. And I had a lot of pogs for some reason, although I didn't play much (by that point, I think I was too old to get into it). Those weren't really prone to creeping over-powered rules, aside from heavier slammers... but then, they weren't very strategic either.

Does anybody here remember pogs?

Killer Instinct for the super nintendo, the classic mario NES games, and I remember playing the original DOOM on pc at my cousins house. That was the coolest shit ever. Now look around at games like Titanfall. Holy crap how technology has increased!

You're right; expansions and banned lists keep coming out (for obvious business reasons). In Yugioh there are moments where the meta is in stalemeta for periods of 3-4 months a year, where the best 2 or 3 decks are well known to people (untill too many tournaments are won with those decks and the banned list, that comes out twice a year, most likely ruins them by reducing the number you can have of/banning foundamental cards).
In this way you're forced to spend money if you want to keep up at a competitive level.
But there are sites like Dueling Network that are completely free; it keeps up with new changes, it has all the cards you want and it has a large player base. In this way you can participate at online tournaments/play at a competitive level while spending nothing. It really is convenient, especially for those who can't afford to buy cards.

While this does usually happen with most decks, there is one that consistently still wins. Dark worlds, and it still hasn't been hit yet. They're one of the cheapest ones to make and top tier.
