So, my birthday is tomorrow, and my grandma (who lives with me) is making me do this Hindu ritual thing. I'm trying to explain to her that I'm an atheist, but she just doesn't understand. She's really the sweetest old lady, and I know she means well, but I can't escape it. I tried talking to her, which didn't work, and I also tried talking to my parents, and they said to just go with it. WHAT DO I DO??

Is it important to you not to do the ritual, perhaps to make a point? Do you feel it would be disrespectful to do a ritual that you disagree with? If not then you could just go along with it. If it is important to you not to do the ritual then I'd need to know more about why.

I kind of want to just go along with it, to not cause too much trouble, but I also kind of feel like I can't do it, because my family just doesn't understand why I'm so passionate about atheism. I really don't know. Maybe I just needed to vent

By "making" you do it, what do you mean?

She probably does understand, but just doesn't accept it.

It doesn't involve any animal sacrifices or anything right? If it's harmless, it might be easier to just go with it as long as it's not a huge thing.
I don't like the idea of people being forced to do religious rituals against their wills though.

I think you should do it for tradition. The same way I enjoy Christmas, I enjoy receiving and giving. I don't see why not? The fundamentals, for me, of atheism stems from the personal understanding and realizations of the world we live in. It's a personal choice to be atheist and not always a personal choice to be born into a religious family. They will decease one day, so don't worry too much about them indoctrinating you anymore. Just stick with your ideas, and may the force be in your favor, young padawan.
