Hello folks!

I have been vegan for two years now and recently became an atheist. It's nice to be able to interact with like-minded people, it's very uncommon to find vegans and/or atheists out there. I thought I briefly shared with you why I became a vegan atheist and if you are a vegan or an atheist yourself I would love to know why you made the change.

I became vegan right after watching Earthlings because I realized palate and recreational pleasure is not worth the suffering animals are forced to endure, it's horrible, unnecessary, and unfair. I also realized how innocent and noble animals really are and that we have much to learn from them.

I abandoned my christian beliefs because I can't stand the idea of a God not doing anything to stop rape, murder, suffering and hunger. I think that religion is a way to control people and it imposes fear. And, after considering how many religions exist and how many gods people have worshipped, I began to doubt christianity.

So here's why I became vegan: https://theveganatheist.com/forum/viewt ... ?f=4&t=769

As for becoming atheist, I didn't. I grew up in a rather secular environment in the Bay Area and did not hear people discuss religion much during my childhood. My parents are atheists as well and they never taught me much about religion. They never told me to believe that there's a God, nor did they insist that there isn't, so I grew up in the default position (disbelief). Now that I've gotten older I've thought about theism and religion carefully, and still have not yet seen reason to believe in a God, so I remain an atheist.

I've seen Earthlings too and I agree that it's quite moving. I'd also recommend learning about nutrition and the health arguments in favor of vegan diets, if you haven't already done so. Have you seen Dr. Michael Greger's videos (nutritionfacts.org)?

Welcome JM, thanks for sharing; you can look over some of the other intro thread for a great wealth of stories we're accumulating. It shows how people come from many different places, and can reach the same rational, compassionate conclusions.

I'm glad you've joined, and I hope you like it here.
