New Atheism

Post by Red »

o boi drama

So I was browsing my Email, and saw that I had some updates from one of my favourite go to sites, Cheezburger.com. I got updates from a post I commented on, which was titled "Atheist Arya Doesn't Have Time For Your Religion". Link to full post can be found below (I'm just like a Youtuber! :D ). Anyways, they had yet another link within the post, which led to OP's Dumblr (Link found below aswell. Pls don't spam message her). So I went to her page and it turns out that she is a really, really really, really really really strong new atheist. As most of you may know, I am not a strong new atheist anymore, as I saw that I was becoming more of an arrogant douche more and more. Anyways, this topic isn't going to be about her specifically, rather it will be about New Atheism, as the title suggests. I gave up on the new atheist philosophy about 7 months ago, and I can say with complete sincerity that I was, without a doubt, one of the most arrogant, smartassalic, distasteful, bigoted, and biggest douche in my life (concerning people I met). I've always looked down upon religious people, even the ones who were my friends. I always always always wanted to bring religion into the coversation. Looking back again, I was the biggest instigator on the face of the Earth. I think the main reason why I critiqued religion in such a manner was because it made me feel more intelligent than the people around me. Anyways, I see no reason to mock religion. Unless you're talking about taking religion out of our public schools and government, because I agree that secular systems help remove any religious bias (even though most new atheists are bigoted and bias due to atheistic reasons). And even then, ideally reasonable dialogue is the best way to do things (unless you can't convince a facist, then acquaint his head with the pavement), not constantly mocking the opposition. If the opposition doesn't do rational dialogue, then that's a different story. There's no need to go Dusty Smith on someone's ass and call them fucking retarded and expect to make a point. That will just make you lose a ton of credibility. Now I am a bit on a tight schedule here, so I'll make an addendum later.

Hm...

It might not be useful, but that doesn't necessarily make it harmful.

And it might be useful for some people. Some religious people probably respond better to that than they would a less offensive argument.

Also, maybe it's useful for showing some atheists (like S.E. Cupp) that religion is extremely ridiculous and so religion shouldn't be apart of government.

And maybe mocking religion in a comedic way will get some atheists who are somewhat indifferent to the issue of religion to be more interested.

Did I ever say that? I never implyed that it was harmful, rather I was implying that it made people more religion biased, which would manifest itself into more political things. I personally for one think that people can believe what they want, but it should be left out of public schools and government. While I myself am not a fan of the current public school system and government, keeping religion out of said things allows more, say, self thought and not indoctrination.

IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII don't understand.

Yeah maybe for the topic. In my rant as a whole, I was referring to the f*ckers (i.e. Dusty Smith) who mock religion with the only purpose is to degrogatize (That's not a word, but I'm making it one) the religion population as a whole, like calling the entire Muslim population f-ing retarded. Sure, George Carlin was one of the best comedians I ever came across, but I'm pretty sure most of the audience watched for the jokes, and to identify with George. And even then, in one of his books, the preface states that he doesn't give a fuck what happens to this country.

What?[/quote]

I was trying to say that people will make some decisions due to atheistic reasons. For instance, they may use an ad hominim and avoid all religious contributions and alike. Another example is the Chapel Hill Shootings. While the killer may or may not have killed due to his religious views, a safe assertion would be that he was bigoted and for that atheistic bigotry to manifest itself into violence. Look, atheists can be just as biased as religious people when it comes to stuff like this. And as insane as this may sound, an atheistic polititian may say that we need to teach children the value of atheism and the possibility of there being no God, instead of letting them think for themselves (unless the parents are for the force beliefs to child philosophy :? ). You may say that sounds like an implausible possibility, but hey, religious political figures say it all the time. Ok well maybe not all the time. Jesus christ I'm starting to sound like S.E. Cupp here. To counter that statement, I say that atheistic politians can be just as bad as religious polititians. Or just as good. I really don't care about that stuff, despite what you may have read in this rant.

A surprising amount of freethinkers or intellectuals are dogmatic pseudo-intellectuals (such as randroids). This not only applies to atheism, but other issues such as social rights activism. I probably also fit into this category...but for the sake of credibility let's pretend I never said that!

Atheistic bigotry doesn't exist. There aren't any doctrines in atheism that dictate how people should behave, so it's a mistake to make atheism out to be just another form of religion (this is a common strategy of religious apologists)

Both veganism and atheism are really just stupid words we are forced to use for the time being, because most of mankind hasn't come to its senses yet

It makes sense to make fun of religion because it often urges people to do harmful things for stupid reasons. In practice I find it hard to do though, since all the Christians I have met seem really off balance mentally :S

By atheistic bigotry, I meant that people were bigoted for atheistic reasons. Read reply to EquALLity.

Well, like I said, there could be violence due to atheist reasons. Not to mention that there's poking fun at something, and then just being a dick. I don't really mind mocking the religion itself as much as mocking the people who follow it.

Mmm, doesn't compute. If someone is atheist it says almost nothing about them, so when an atheist goes and kills innocent people, it's not something we can blame on his lack of belief in god. Rather, it's gonna be attributable to some kind of mental disorder, a strong belief in some non-religious ideology, etc. There are still plenty of stupid and dangerous ideologies that are godless

See, if a muslim kills someone, the responsibility of condeming this terroist act collectivley relies on the entire muslim population. If an atheist shoots someone then y'know they're probably just an outcast with mental health problems. Interesting how that works, isn't it?

It depends. If a Muslim kills a store owner to steal a pack of bacon and a bottle of vodka, then we can pretty safely say he wasn't motivated by his religion. However, when a Muslim, who happens to be a highly functioning computer scientist from England, one day decides to start beheading journalists and aid workers, then we can safely say he's motivated by religion.

In comparison, American school shooters are often withdrawn from society and show very obvious signs of mental disorder. With much of the religious violence we see that isn't the case. Here you have people with PhD's in engineering who are willing to leave their perfectly normal life behind in order to fly an airplane into a building.
