Hello to all

Post by Nilesh »

hey
my name is Nilesh, i ma from India, 22 years now, studying engineering, i am a vegetarian(in my family my mom is now, but my sister(she doesnt eat everything though) and dad are not)

i too saw your channel on you-tube and liked it. :)

btw one think i want to say that i do eat eggs when like nothing else is available, but i sincerely try not to, i hope after getting a job i wont need to do it anymore.

I'm a Hindu, but i think, as from a Christian or Muslim perspective i would be in Atheist basket

im here because, two thing basically
i like being vegetarian, because i think there is just too much violence towards animals and i think both animals and humans should be treated with respect, i mean it's like live and let live, like we should not kill for taste
second i like discussion about religion as a topic, because it does raises some interesting questions

it's the first forum i have joined like ever, so i am looking forward towards how it goes

anyway one think i would like to ask is many times when i am chatting with someone and tell them that i am from India a lot of people just disconnect so is there some problem with it

People disconnecting from Indians? It's prejudice, because it seems most Indians you encounter online, especially in anonymous chats like Omegle, are usually seeking sexual services and they're not very discreet about it. They also tend to be really bad at English which kind of ruins any good conversation. And I guess then there's a good portion of people who're just racist, and don't wanna speak to any ethnicity but their own (why? I have no clue).
You seem to be a reflected decent fellow however, so welcome to the forums! - and please do not hesitate to start topics, for any reason.

That's great, I hope we can help you become more and more vegan over time. :)

Can you find a B-12 supplement there? It's the only vitamin which can't be found in plants (or made from sunlight, like vitamin D).

Are you a theistic Hindu, what are your views on "god" in the traditional monotheistic sense?

hey brimstoneSalad it's nice to hear from you. :)

well i have been vegetarian all my life(plus eggs when i have to), i don't really have any problem with milk and i love it, but i would love to hear the vegan point of view, i mean what's wrong in consuming milk ? :?:
brimstoneSalad wrote:Can you find a B-12 supplement there? It's the only vitamin which can't be found in plants (or made from sunlight, like vitamin D).
to be honest no idea and not interested very much either,
OK i don't eat animals not because it is more healthier to be Vegetarian(it's more of a sweetener for me), i mean i have been Vegetarian for as long as i can remember, and as a child you aren't really concerned about which Vitamin you will have, for me it's about not making others suffer just for my own personal benefit, so whether there be anything missing or not i would still be vegetarian
but i do hope this B-12 is not very important ;)
brimstoneSalad wrote:Are you a theistic Hindu, what are your views on "god" in the traditional monotheistic sense?
well i believe in non-dual theory of Vedanta, but i am also interested in Jainism and Buddhism.

am i a theistic Hindu, well this depends on what your definition of God is, but yes according to Hindu philosophy it(Advaita Vedanta, that i am interested in) comes within theistic schools, but again how we see it(God/Brahman) is very different from how God is portrayed in Christianity/Islam

about god in traditional monotheistic sense, well just this that it is so different from my own tradition that i have never been able to make much sense of it, but also i am not an expert in it(monotheistic tradition) so i don't think think i should comment on something on which my knowledge is as limited as mine is

i can talk about my own tradition and others should talk about theirs

There are three main points about milk which are important.

First, the health point: Milk is actually really bad for adult humans. It's mostly saturated fat. It's meant for baby cows, so it's a bad habit to drink or eat dairy.

Second, environment: Animal agriculture produces a heavy burden on the environment through greenhouse gases. Even milk. Because now the demand is so high, and there are so many people, there are many more cows than the world can bear. If there were fewer people, this would not be a problem, but that's not the reality we live in. Because of our large population, we must be more responsible for our environment, and not be wasteful by relying on animal agriculture.

Have you seen the documentary "cowspiracy"? It's a popular one about animal agriculture, and gets into sustainability issues.

Third, animal welfare: Unfortunately, even in India, many cows are killed after they stop producing milk. Even in regions where this is forbidden, cows are death marched across the border to where they can be legally killed for leather once they are no longer "useful".
In other countries, this is even worse, and cows are killed when very young, and kept in small pins, milked by machines, with their babies taken away and killed for veal.

This point doesn't apply to all milk: If you have a cow on your family's land who is well taken care of, this may be an exception (although it still creates a larger environmental burden to consume dairy, and is still unhealthy).
But there is a final consideration: Even if you can do something safely, we should serve as a good example to others, and abstain from milk so that others can see the benefits of that. Not everybody can drink milk from a family cow, so it will be seen as unfair if privileged people drink humane milk and tell others to quit drinking milk. I hope that helps clarify the issue.

Without B-12 you will suffer nerve damage, a type of Anemia, and then die.

B-12 is made by bacteria, so it may be common in third world countries where water is contaminated by feces. But I recommend everybody take B-12.

Hello Nilesh! What's it like in India? Is Hinduism polytheistic, or 100% monotheistic? Thoughts on any other religion? Atheism? How long have you wanted to go Vegan?

if i sound arrogant, close, insensitive, hurtful in any sentence below then i sincerely apologize, and my intention was never to be as such
brimstoneSalad wrote:

ok, so like i drink milk very often, and if i drink like 1/2 liters everyday i don't think it will pose any considerable risk me, will it ?
i don't think your lifestyle is where you need to do good amount of physical labor everyday(and i am not talking about one hour in gym), because you need fat in that situation
it is for baby cows, yes it is, and that is why it drinks the milk 1st then we are allowed to take

I don't think there is any species presently present in this world, which is more than what earth/environment can handle, I think earth has enough to fulfill all our needs but not enough to fulfill even one person's greed, and i think here many people confuses.
for example there anything which goes into industrial/commercial production harms the environment,
even vegetables, whether in organic or inorganic method the process kills lots of insects and other life form
take the example of transportation, from taking out oil/coal, to refining it, to burning it , every process is so harmful for environment
or take the example of this laptop through which i am answering, in making it many elements are used which are very harmful for the environment
so we should stop growing vegetables, should not use electricity and should not use any electronic items also

i know this may seem i am against/advocating being vegan or something , but i am not, let me make it clear, if i give these arguments to any non-vegan it may discourage him/her to become vegan, but i guess we both/all here have already passed that, so we should be able to discuss these hard topics also(at-least among ourselves)

you can give me any 5 example and I'm sure I'll be able to point it out in them

so in my view the commercial scale is the problem, because otherwise, it'll be like saying if you kill animals for eating then it is wrong, but if you kill them so that you can do mining and make aluminum then that'll be acceptable
brimstoneSalad wrote:Have you seen the documentary "cowspiracy"? It's a popular one about animal agriculture, and gets into sustainability issues.
no, 1st time heard of it.

yes it happens, it's a shame, but you know which ideologies promote it, the secular and atheist and liberal/progressive ideologies, but can we blame all atheist/secular/progressives for this, for that matter, will you ask people not to be/call themselves atheist/liberal anymore.
the problem is how you/we view other sentient beings, and do we consider it's it right to build our bridge of progress on their corpses, it's a very difficult question, but a very important one also.

i accept all the wrongs that are happening India, and as a society none of us(Indians in this context) can disown the responsibility(whatever proportion we have )
the the solutions that we need also should be genuine, and not something that just resonates with our own bias

look we all(all sentient beings) are sharing this world together, and we all are family(from evolution itself), so this notion that we should not use animals is just :? , i know many bad practices regarding animals are there in every society and we should try to eliminate those and not try to just shun out animals from our lives
i mean the emphasis should be on co-existing

and i should clarify this "so this notion that we should not use animals is just :? "
i mean in which meaning i am saying so
when we live in a society,we all will work with each other, and in some certain sense use one another, not in a negative manner, but like i use a farmer(because he grown food for me), i use carpenters and electricians and all other people, these people will use me, now here the implied meaning is using services that others will provide, but we should also make sure that no one exploits the other, like i should not be able to exploit the farmer, but this is not the same as saying from tomorrow no one should use farmers and grow their own food
in the same manner animals(1st animals are not here for us to eat them), we should have a constructive relationship with them and not just be blindly against anything associated with animals(just to satisfy our own ego, because how many of us will stop electricity and electronics so that it wont cause kill any more animals in it's manufacturing directly or indirectly)

"If you have a cow on your family's land who is well taken care of, this may be an exception" yes this is what is needed, we need to develop personal relationship with animals, they should be treated like family members
when we had a cow, i knew it's name, it knew me, it was a sentient/conscious being with whom i shared my home, and it helped me towards developing compassion towards others
(now if i say this about dog it comes very natural to some person from west, but when said in reference to other animals just :!: to them, there is no real difference, the problem is cultural bias ) it'll help us a lot

"not everybody can do it ", why exactly ? what is stopping these people, if you/they/I have wrong preferences then we should not blame others for that, i mean textile industry in many places employs kids, in many places and working conditions are very bad , so the answer should be to correct these things, or just ask everyone to stop wearing cloths itself

"so it will be seen as unfair if privileged people drink humane milk and tell others to quit drinking milk.", so if i grow organic food in my backyard and then tell someone else that mechanized farming uses so many chemicals and it has so much bad effect on you and environment, so am i being hypocritical here in telling him or growing organic myself, am i being unfair to this person ?

brimstoneSalad wrote: Without B-12 you will suffer nerve damage, a type of Anemia, and then die.

B-12 is made by bacteria, so it may be common in third world countries where water is contaminated by feces. But I recommend everybody take B-12.
but i know families(not some few, but more then the population of many European countries, but i don't know everyone personally) that have for generations not eaten any egg/meat, so how come they don't have any nerve damage, or anemia is not especially prevalent among them
so this statement/question i am not even understand completely :!:
brimstoneSalad wrote:

ok , i will, basically it is

"only god is real(permanent), rest everything else is false(temporary)"
but here god is not a being, it's just pure consciousness

you yourself in your most subtle form is god(we call it Brahman), and only that is you, rest everything is just your delusion(i.e,subject object split, which is false)

well it's hot here, I guess it is because of global warming,(now winter has started)
rains have become uneven,
this year 1/3 country is under drought

our cricket team is performing very bad :(
it's good i wasn't really into watching cricket anyway ;)

waiting for my result

festival season is going on here right now :D

new new political drams every day, sometimes it amuses sometimes it just irritates  :x

so, that's what happening in India ;)

"polytheistic, or 100% monotheistic", my answer would be none, look Hinduism evolved very differently Abrahamic Religions so if you want answering/'understand Hinduism', in it's(Abrahamic) terminology, i don't think you would be able to do it.
like let me give you an example, in no Indian language there is any word for religion.
now why is it neither polytheistic or monotheistic, because in both of them the presupposed assumption is that there is something other than you(in you question's context i.e, God), but if there is nothing apart from you then it can not be termed as either polytheistic or monotheistic(again Abrahamic definitions just doesn't work here )

if you are interested then you can watch this video, it's about Defining God(from our perspective )

"Thoughts on any other religion? " shouldn't be responding.

Thoughts on Atheism?some sound very genuine(sam harris), some sound arrogant(richard dawkins, not too much but sometimes you get the feeling), my personal view is they are not different from any other group, i mean it's not even a deal here(leave being a big deal), sometimes i don't get why people are shouting it so loudly on internet(either for or against ), i mean i can go to any temple and say i don't believe in it, and mostly people will say yes yes keep walking(because you'll be in a line)

going Vegan
never actually
i will stop eating eggs(like now i am living in hostel and food is not great so sometimes you i do eat boiled eggs, because it's easy to store and cheap, i don't really enjoy it even now, and once i complete my studies and get a job and my own place i'll stop it )
but about Milk, i have never thought about giving it up, actually i would like to have my own cow in future, definitely after having my own place :)
i try to avoid leather belts and shoos and all that but you know sometimes shoes are just part of the uniform so :(
