His comparisons of gun ownership vs. homicide are poor, since there are confounding variables: Rural life.
People in rural areas are more likely to own guns, and the crime rates there are lower due mainly to lower population density (less opportunity, fewer gangs, etc.). Look along those lines for problems.
You have to control for variables when examining these issues.
That said, if the issue is homicides, non-familial homicides are mainly due to the war on drugs fueling gang profit/violence (a place where guns increase violence significantly), and the rest (familial) probably mainly the fault of Disney for reinforcing the cultural 'value' of infatuation as a legitimate reason to have a relationship.
