Dude, automation is happening right now. I'm pretty sure finding a job may be increasingly difficult depending on what it is. If you watch How It's Made you'll see how much they rely on technology rather than human interaction when it comes to manufacturing things. It's not going to happen to every single job, but I think most jobs will be replaced by robots within 56 years.

The process of replacing humans with machines has been around for a while now, and one of the downsides I've noticed with the push for a higher minimum wage is that companies are investing more money more rapidly to find a way to remove paid hourly workers from the workforce. (Not against higher wages, mind you, but every action has an opposite and equal reaction...)

I think in the long run this is a good thing, but the transition period has a lot of issues that will need to be addressed, since this will basically change the entire economic structure of the world. Any ideas on how the transition could be made to have a minimal impact on society?

It's definitely happening. Raising minimum wage will accelerate it, and could be disastrous.

I have thought about this for a long time. With a rising population and the implementation of automation/robot technology, I agree that the transition period would be difficult. It is sad that this would mostly impact those with lower income. I wish people considered this more!!

Exactly. To perpetuate the idea that everybody should have a job is harmful and ridiculous in a world where machines can do most of the work for us. I don't know how far the capabilities of AI will reach, but I don't think there's any good reason to assume that there is something unique about the human brain that makes it superior to AI in any way. Why would we force people into unsatisfying and depressing occupations that could easily be done by machines for less money?

There is good evidence that unemployment can lead to depression, but I think there are many potential causes for this that can be treated without employment:
- The social norm and idea of success; you should have a job, or you're a failure;
- Lack of social and/or physical activity;
- Lack of personal development;
- Lack of purpose/meaning;
- The stress and insecurity of searching for a job;
- Poverty.

There's probably more I can't think of. I suspect volunteering, education and all sorts of communities can fill the gap left by employment. It's a massive change of lifestyle, but probably an unavoidable one.

Since Industrial revolution more jobs are replaced with machines but not all are prone to automation (only ones which can be divided into series of simple tasks). Imagination, creativity and ability to solve complex tasks are still human domain.

My opinion is, that unless we build truly independent AI, we are safe. But people will need higher education because there will be less and less labor intensive jobs available.
