The aging brain

Post by knot »

Apparently we start gradually getting dumber even after the age of just 25.

Is there any known way to slow down this process, or maybe even reverse it?

From what I can tell, there doesn't really seem to be. I've only read about 500 pages of gerontopsychology, though... maybe someone knows more.

It seems that the losses have to be compensated for with different kinds of human capital (e.g. experience, more discipline, etc.)

Anyways, also interested in other people's take on this kinda depressing subject :D

Research on this isn't great.

Sub clinical strokes and buildup of damage from them are a likely cause.
As such, keep your cardiovascular system in very good shape, and your cholesterol very low, and make sure you take DHA or eat plenty of minimally heated (raw is better) ALA and limit Omega 6 so you have the nutrients your brain needs.
Your brain can repair itself, but it's very slow so it's not usually relevant on a clinical time scale.

If it is any consolation fluid intelligence is supposed to decline but not crystallised intelligence.

Stay healthy and eat well to get the best outcome but aging hasn’t been stopped yet.
