Sam Harris YouTube Playlist

Post by IsacharJones »

I assume many people registered with this forum are fans of Sam Harris. I thought a playlist of video content featuring Sam Harris, uploaded by the owners of that content, may be of interest here. The playlist features debates, lectures and interviews and I've made my best attempt to structure it in chronological order. This makes it particularly interesting as you can witness how some of his views or his way of stating them have changed in response to criticism and how his range of interests has expanded over the years.

That's a pretty big statement. I'm not sure Sam would be happy reading that as it suggests that his opinions are made to please the populace rather than saying things the way they are. Please give examples of why you think this is the case.

I meant in terms of clarity. For example, after having his dialogue with Maajid Nawaz, he introduced the terms Islamist and conservative Muslim into his vocabulary when speaking on the subject of Islam. This was simply to be more clear about which subset of Muslims he was addressing when describing certain Islam-motivated behaviour, not to avoid being perceived as a bigot.

OK, are you sure that this is a shift in his retoric? I remember years ago him explaining the difference between an islamist and a jihadist.

Definitely. You witness his apprehension of these terms in the book Islam and the Future of Tolerance where Maajid does an exposition of them and Sam responds in a way that indicates they were novel to him. It may be that you recall him using some these words years ago because the dialogue between Maajid and Sam was ongoing long before the book was released (as far back as 2014 and perhaps even earlier).

OK, are you an ex-muslim yourself or am I being mislead by your avatar? If you were a muslim what motivated you to become an apostate and what was the reaction from friends/family/community?

 No. I don't know if you recognise the man in my avatar? It's Anjem Choudary. He's the UKs most notorious preacher of a strain of Islam completely antithetical to secularism and liberalism. He's currently in prison for being openly in support of ISIS.

My avatar is meant to be ironic.

I do remember this idiot. First time I saw him was about five years ago in a heated exchange with Richard Dawkins.
