I find it hard to believe that his cabinet failed to anticipate what would result from firing James Comey. Trump must be extremely difficult to work with and I'm sure most people in the white house would rather see Pence as president. Did his advisers "fail" to warn him knowing that such a move could lead to impeachment?

Sure it's possible, but there's no evidence to support it. I find it just as likely that he did get warned but ignored them because he's a fool or because he was very afraid of what Comey may have found.
