Ebola Jokes?

Post by dinnermeal »

I admit, I've made one or two of them, and I feel guilty about it. But that's before I really knew about Ebola and how dangerous it really was. Ebola either kills you or you beat it and gain immunity from it for 10 years. It makes you sick, unhealthy, and you lose vital fluids from your body. Sounds real fun, I know.

Ebola jokes are more insensitive than racist jokes. And I'm not talking about being racist. I'm talking about using the term racist incorrectly, as if racism was harmless or funny. You might not see it in your life, but I would really like some opinions on the subject.

As a particularly serious disease, it may be seen similarly in insensitivity to AIDS jokes, or possibly Cancer jokes.

However, within the sphere of cultural influence where the jokes may circulate, it's also an extremely rare cause of death, and in that sense it's less likely to reach the ears of a victim's relatives than jokes about getting hit by a bus or falling off a roof.

Are Ebola jokes becoming particularly popular now?

Unfortunately, they are getting popular, many of my peers laugh as they say they have Ebola and touch others around them like it's that easy to get Ebola. It's just kind of unsettling to me, but it's not as unsettling as other things going on in the world, and I agree, a victim's relative would never hear of such a thing unless it was put on the news, and because it's such a minor thing, it won't be.

Eh. I am quite desensitized about this. In the Netherlands guys of my age use cancer as if there's some kind of grammar rule that requires you to say cancer at least once every sentence.

I don't know how ebola is used in jokes exactly, that kind matters.

I know all about it, but I try to avoid these things as much as possible (happy to say I never use 'cancer'). Same thing with using the word 'gay' a lot as a mild swear word, which I actually participated in for a long time because it's so normal. People even think it's crazy of me that I try to avoid using it. I don't think it's really a big deal for most people—and most people actually are very tolerant towards gay people—but I don't think it's right when expressing humanistic values at the same time.

I don't really mind any type of jokes - since, like it says, it's a joke: nothing to be taken seriously.
That's probably because I play with friends that don't have any restraint :D

Haha, have you seen the chat of the more popular streamers on Twitch? It's a minefield of 'ebola', 'cancer', and 'aids'.

If you've ever been on 4chan before then you know it's all about Ebola. They've even created this false idol called "Ebola-chan".

Here's a news article about it http://www.bustle.com/articles/41088-th ... horrifying

Apparently google has only indexed 0,04% of the internet, so this must be quite an easy job.
