This is a series of Dutch articles that explores ten commandments of good food:
The ten commandments are:
1. Eat local.
2. Eet organic or in any case products wherefore no or as little as possible pesticide has been used.
3. Eat less and only animal friendly produced meat.
4. Eat products where no E-numbers (additives approved by the EU) or other weird substances have been added to.
5. Pay more.
6. Cook yourself, devote at least one and a half hour daily to your food.
7. Eat at the table with others.
8. Try to produce a portion of the food yourself, however small that portion might be.
9. Don't waste any food.
10. Eat tasty.
The largest part of this is minuscule in priority to the third point. Added sugars, fat and salt are ignored, not to mention dairy and eggs. The ethical and environmental aspects are bottled down to one commandment. I thought it would be a nice thought experiment to come up with 10 food commandments of my own. Perhaps once the TVA forums has agreed on ten commandments, I could send an amendment to the Volkskrant (the newspaper).
1. Eat to minimize suffering. (Dutch catchphrase: "Eet geen leed (Eat no suffering)")
2. Eat no flesh.
3. Consume no animal byproducts.
4. Avoid refined sugars, salt, saturated- and trans-fats.
5. Maximize fiber, antioxidant and phytochemical intake.
6. Eat many greens, fruits and beans.
7. Eat whole grains and colored potatoes.
8. Avoid juice from concentrate and oils.
9. Cook yourself.
10. Eat tasty, but think it through.
What do you guys think? Any suggestions?
"I advocate infinite effort on behalf of very finite goals, for example correcting this guy's grammar."
- David Frum
I'd generalize it, and make it look more "unbiased" which a newspaper would want.
1. Eat ethically, be mindful of the consequences of your food choices. Avoid animal products (animal death and suffering), palm oil (rainforest destruction), Quinoa (economic problems in its native country)
2. No trans-fats or hydrogenated oils
3. Avoid bad or empty calories; avoid added sugar, and saturated fat
4. Choose unsaturated fats, for Essential fatty acids, and look for foods high in Omega 3
5. Choose whole and colorful foods. Greens, beans, fruits, whole grains, and particularly wild grains or richly colored alternatives to common foods (e.g. purple potatoes instead of white ones).
6. Cook yourself, and don't rush; devote at least one and a half hour daily to your food.
7. Eat at the table with others
...8. Don't waste any food.
9. Lead by example, and encourage others to heath healthy and kind.
