was the government of Ragusan Republic the good guys?

Post by teo123 »

And, what do you guys think, was the government of Ragusan Republic the good guys? I think they actually weren't, that the policies they implemented are incompatible with modern thought. I mean, I don't really understand how can so many people think that Dubravka (the name means "Little Oak Forest", because it sounds similar to Dubrovnik, the capital of Ragusan Republic) by Ivo Gundulić, where he advocated the policies of Ragusan Republic, is one of the greatest pieces of Croatian literature.
I mean, let's think about what the messages that Ivo Gundulić was sending in Dubravka are:
1. That it would be a good thing if we return to pastoral life.
2. That having aristocracy that doesn't have to prove itself to be allowed to rule, whose right to rule is inherited, is somehow justified. Even worse, that the aristocrats (represented by Miljenko) are born "more beautiful in soul".
3. That people whose ancestors didn't live in Dubrovnik since the millennia ago shouldn't be allowed to enter the government. In other words, "Immigrants shouldn't have equal rights, not even legal ones.". Because I suppose Grdan symbolizes immigrants.
4. That it's justified that people don't get to choose for themselves whom they will marry. Namely, in that mythical land called Dubrava, judges decide who is the most beautiful of men and who is the most beautiful of women and force them to get married. And people don't object to that.
5. That wars are justified as long as they are for "freedom" ("O lijepa, o draga, o slatka slobodo(...)Svi ljudski životi ne mogu biti plata tvojoj čistoj ljepoti.")
I think the messages he is sending are simply disgusting to anybody who spends a few seconds of thinking what that actually means. The Gundulić'es long poem Suze Sina Razmetnoga (Tears of the Naive Son) is a bit more acceptable, in that it's believable he was describing some actual event (that some young man fled from home and spent all him money on some women who was using him and later left him.). I mean, it can be interpreted as being sexist (implying all women are evil like the one in the poem) and saying that people should obey their parents no matter what, but it doesn't have to be interpreted that way.

@teo123. For future reference, please start a new thread whenever you bring up a new subject unrelated to the OP.
How to become vegan in 4.5 hours:
1.Watch Forks over Knives (Health)
2.Watch Cowspiracy (Environment)
3. Watch Earthlings (Ethics)
Congratulations, unless you are a complete idiot you are now a vegan.

I mean, I supposed the conversation will go so that somebody points to the fact that Ragusan Republic practiced quarantines back in the day, a thing you seem to believe in, and that it's good because of that.
