I get the whole presidential race thing as that really does affect the world. However, why have around the clock news coverage of a train crash with six casualties when a similar news story in India or Nigeria wouldn't even make it to the ticker tape? I know CNN is based in the U.S. but its viewer base is world wide.

Ratings. Media sensationalism.
And Westerners' lives are seen as more valuable by their viewers, so they cover that more.

It's definitely not right, and a large part of what's wrong with journalism today, and by consequence, what's wrong with politics.
